Getting found on social media can feel overwhelming,  but you’ve learned by now that hashtags are a key way to get in front of the right people. Here’s the catch — how to maximize them differs from platform to platform. I’ve learned the ins and outs of hashtags on TikTok, Twitter, Instagram, and more. And now I’m sharing my best-info with you! Read on for how to get the most out of your well-loved social media platforms.

Instagram

Instagram allows you to use up to 30 hashtags, but according to other Instagram educators, they recommend focusing on 15 niche hashtags per post. Test this out for yourself and use your insights to see if you are able to get a higher reach with less hashtags. Instagram’s hashtags range from the expected to the highly curated — it’s well worth your while to research your niche’s most-loved tags and keep track of their ever-changing densities. Key reminder for you, Instagram-lovers, is to always put your sponsor’s hashtags first.

Twitter

Arguably the most hashtag-focused social media has a surprising hashtag suggestion: Only 2 hashtags per post. That means if you’re promoting a sponsor, that valuable real estate belongs to them first and foremost. When you’re making posts that aren’t about a race event or focusing on a sponsors’ product, focus on using hashtags that attract your very niche market (just like on other social media platforms).

TikTok

To start — if you’re not on TikTok, you’re missing out on a HUGE marketing and growth opportunity. Hashtag strategy is still being defined as far as TikTok is concerned and there’s not technically a limit, but in a caption space, you’ve only got 100 characters to work with, so that means every hashtag character counts. Use them wisely! Just like with Instagram, Twitter, and the other social media platforms we’ve discussed, make sure to use niche-specific hashtags when posting at all times.

LinkedIn

LinkedIn’s primary purpose is network building with a professional edge. Your biggest advantage with LinkedIn is connecting with potential sponsors and building relationships. Hashtags are more straightforward on LinkedIn than with any other social media (besides Facebook) and I suggest using 2-3 per post focusing on your niche and using sponsor hashtags when possible and necessary.

Facebook

Facebook gives you lots of personal connection opportunities. While building your network is your best chance for success on Facebook, hashtags are still relevant. Just like with LinkedIn, 2-3 per post is my recommended range, focusing on sponsor and niche tags. Make sure that you’re sharing your best content from your Facebook Page, rather than from your personal profile or a Facebook Group.
